For the purposes of this article, the word “Hacker” will be used to describe anyone who is seen doing “clever things with a computer” during the course of their respective movie/TV show.
Angela Bennett – The Net
Angela Bennett from 1995’s The Net is the OG female hacker. She de-buggs video games for a big San Francisco based company where no one has ever seen her face, leaving her especially vulnerable to identity theft when she gets a little to close to finding out something… dangerous…. Listen, the movie doesn’t make any sense but she hacks her way back to her normal life and everyone lives happily ever after, except the people who died trying to protect her. I would be proud to have her in my gang.
Cameron Howe – Halt and Catch Fire
Cam is technically a programer who almost invents the internet but I’m sure if she had to she could hack into a security mainframe. Also, look at her. Who wouldn’t want her around? Granted, she’s not a people person and is notoriously hard to work for, but there’s no denying she’s brilliant and loyal, almost to a fault.
Nine-Ball – Ocean’s Eight
We don’t really get to see the extent of Nine-Ball’s talents which is why I’m hoping for an Ocean’s 9 and 10, with a higher focus on computer crime, but in the meantime we can imagine her skills are on par with her snark and she is as smart as she is witty. So, welcome aboard, Leslie.
Cindy “Mac” Mackenzie – Veronica Mars
It’s been awhile since I’ve seen Mac in action but I know she hacked into her school’s permanent records at least once. And Veronica trusts her with her life which is good enough for me.
Ramsey – Fast and Furious Franchise (7 and 8 so far)
She invented God’s Eye and even without it, she has a direct line to the rest of the Fast crew so I mean, look. We need her.
I love a rom-com, obviously, and I love a Girl Gang so it just makes sense to marry the two, right? Also, I see how alarmingly white this list is and I don’t like it either.
Andie Anderson – How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days
Andie is fun and smart and she works at a fashion mag so, free samples! She is a very good friend to her two colleagues in the movie, always there to lend an ear or a hand. I think she would push me to write more and indulge my love of a lazy Sunday brunch. I would apartment sit for her when she’s away on assignment and leave notes in her drawers that she won’t find for months later.
Ally Darling – What’s Your Number?
Ally is a bit of a mess, but I still love her. She’s got some family drama (same) and just wants to find a nice guy to settle down with like her sister did. Her friends aren’t great. They perpetuate the stereotype that a woman’s worth is inversely proportional to the amount of sexual partners she’s had which is frankly, a load of bollocks. She lives in an amazing apartment in Boston and has a nice and charming neighbour. She’s quirky but loyal and may not always be on time but she tries hard to be a good friend. I can’t wait to exchange stories about the weird men we’ve dated over cheap wine and Chinese food.
Claire Cleary – Wedding Crashers
Claire seems to hang out mostly with her sisters and her terrible fiancé so she could definitely use some new friends. She likes playing football and going to the beach which I also enjoy. If she wants to invite me and the girls over for a clam bake or whatever, so be it. Claire is still trying to figure herself out and looking to distance herself from the traditions of her family. I would encourage her to travel and spend time getting to know herself and she would give me her old clothes that she’s only worn once.
Olive Penderghast – Easy A
Olive is a remarkable young woman. Smart, funny (she gets it from her dad), self-assured, and principled. She rises above the very worst high school has to offer and teaches everyone a valuable lesson about sexual politics, so she and Ally will have a lot to talk about. Her parents are some of the greatest people in the world so honestly, even if Olive and I lose touch, they would be enough.
Gray Wheeler – Catch and Release
Gray desperately needs some female friends. She pretty much has her fiancé and his three friends and that’s it. They love her and take care of her but she needs ladies. That’s where we come in. Claire would be there for hiking trips and to commiserate about being engaged to someone you don’t really know. Andie and Ally will take her out for drinks and get her to let loose a little. And Olive, as always, will provide a healthy amount of snark.
